Why Rats Invade Homes in the Winter
How to Keep Them Out

As temperatures drop, rats and mice start searching for a warm place to nest. Homes, garages, crawlspaces and even commercial buildings in Santa Rosa and across Sonoma County become ideal hiding spots. Once inside, rodents can chew wires, damage insulation, and spread bacteria through food contamination and droppings.
Following Our Recommendation
1. Seal Up Entry Points
Rodents do not need much space to sneak inside. A rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. A mouse can slip through something as small as a dime. Look for gaps or cracks near:
-
Attic and crawlspace vents
-
Pipes and HVAC connections
-
Window and door frames
-
Foundations or siding
Use steel wool, caulking or weatherproof foam to fill small holes. Larger gaps should be sealed with metal flashing or weatherstripping to prevent rodents from chewing their way in.
2. Eliminate Food and Water Sources
Rodents are always looking for an easy meal. To make your home less attractive:
-
Store food and pet food in airtight containers
-
Wipe down counters and sweep regularly
-
Take out the trash and keep lids sealed
-
Fix any plumbing leaks or dripping faucets
Removing these resources gives rodents one less reason to move in.

3. Keep Outdoor Areas Clean
The outside of your property matters just as much as the inside. Rats often nest in overgrown shrubs, wood piles or cluttered corners before they ever find their way indoors.
-
Trim trees and bushes away from your home
-
Store firewood at least 20 feet from the house
-
Keep trash bins sealed and clean
-
Avoid standing water and overwatering plants
A clean yard is your first line of defense.
4. Protect Crawlspaces and Attics
Rats prefer dark, quiet spaces. Attics and crawlspaces are some of their favorite places to hide and build nests.
-
Install vent covers and check for gaps
-
Use a vapor barrier to reduce moisture
-
Look for droppings, gnaw marks or disturbed insulation
-
Schedule routine inspections during colder months
If you catch activity early, you can prevent a full-blown infestation.
