Santa Rosa Pest Inspection

Real Home Case Study

Santa Rosa Pest Inspection

At Nature Pacific Pest Services, we recently performed a pest and structural inspection in Santa Rosa, California, and the findings were a clear reminder of why routine pest inspections are so important. Homes in Santa Rosa and surrounding Sonoma County areas are especially vulnerable to pest-related issues like termites, rodents, and dry rot—especially in structures with moisture problems or deferred maintenance.

In this particular inspection, we uncovered moisture intrusion, rodent activity, structural decay, and ventilation issues—all things that could have been avoided or minimized with regular inspections and upkeep.

Key Findings from the Santa Rosa Pest Inspection

Surface Fungus in Crawlspace and Attic
We found surface fungus present in both the crawlspace and attic space. Surface fungus is a wood-destroying organism that can lead to further issues like dry rot and structural weakening. It thrives in damp, unventilated areas and is one of the most common—and preventable—findings in our Santa Rosa inspections.

Excessive Moisture in Crawlspace
High moisture levels in the crawlspace created ideal conditions for both fungus and pest activity. To correct this, we recommended installing a vapor barrier and a sump pump system to help keep moisture under control. This is especially important in older Santa Rosa homes or homes with poor drainage.

Rodent Infestation in Crawlspace and Attic
Evidence of rodents was found in both the attic and crawlspace, including droppings, urine stains, and nesting material. Rodent exclusion repairs are necessary to seal entry points and prevent future infestations. The existing attic insulation was sparse, contaminated, and not up to code. We recommended a full insulation replacement to restore energy efficiency and eliminate contamination.

Ventilation Issues
Poor cross-ventilation was noted throughout the home, particularly in the foundation and attic spaces. We recommended the installation of additional foundation vents to improve airflow, reduce moisture, and help prevent fungal and pest activity.

Structural Repair Recommendations

Damaged Attic Vents

Two attic vents were in poor condition and no longer functioning as intended. We advised repairing or replacing them to help maintain a healthy ventilation system and keep pests out.

Exterior Wall with Organic Matter
One wall had organic growth and moisture damage behind the siding. We recommended removing the siding, treating the framing with Bora-Care wood preservative and fungicide, reinstalling proper insulation, and replacing the weatherproofing materials like Tyvek paper and flashing before adding new siding, windows, and doors.

Rusted and Tilted Piers
In the crawlspace, several old support piers were rusted and leaning. These should be replaced with pressure-treated 4×4 posts for stability and safety.

Earthquake Bracing
We also recommended the installation of Simpson brace-and-bolt retrofit brackets to help the home better withstand seismic activity—a smart upgrade for many Santa Rosa homeowners.

Why Pest Inspections Matter

This home is a perfect example of how routine pest inspections can prevent serious damage. Many of the issues we found—like surface fungus, rodent entry, and poor ventilation—could have been caught earlier with a basic inspection every 2 to 3 years. At the very least, we recommend an annual crawlspace-only inspection, which is a cost-effective way to monitor hidden problems.
